RE: Anyone using sailboat fuel?

Great mileage, renewable and works better when heated.
Very similar to Kite Fuel!!

RE: Rescue - a bit over the top???>

I know it sounds counter-intuitive to ignore a dog to get them to accept you, but when you think of it from their point of view, it makes sense. Submissive or scared dogs can find any kind of attention very overwhelming. When they get overwhelmed, they shut down. When they shut down, they don't learn anything positive from the experience.
Good luck, and congratulations!
I agree wholeheartedly!! My Aussie is very man-shy; so when a daughter would bring a new guy over to meet the family, I would inform him that if he ignored Ike, Ike would make friends with him.
Some guys had to be "macho" and force themselves on the dog - "Dogs LIKE me". Um, not Ike.
Some listened, ignored Ike, and remarkably...most of them are my son-in-laws.....LOL!!! And Ike loves them. One son-in-law took a wholly different approach - got down on hands and knees and play-bowed to Ike....then proceed to romp and slobber and roll with the dog.... I suppose if you're that agile and willing to make a spectacle of yourself... it works because Ike worships THIS guy....LOL!!

RE: Which direction do you orient TT in hot weather?

I want our awning covering as much of the MH as possible during the heat of the day. We discovered (to our dismay) that the black frames around our windows get REALLY hot and transmit that heat into the interior of the MH on a hot sunny day :-(
I'm seriously considering painting the exterior frames white.

RE: Did you sell/regrets? Not sell/happy you didn't?

Our Class C will be one of the LAST things we ever sell. We don't have that much money tied up in it, and the cost-per-enjoyment ratio is far too low to get rid of it. When the gas prices get crazy, we simply camp closer to home.

RE: GulfStream Conquest Problems

*IF* there's any question that it might be the drive shaft/carrier bearings.... at least in our case, the company that does the frame extensions for Gulf Stream is a company called Sellers, out of Elkhart or its suburbs. I would dare say almost ALL Class C's have had the frame extended? And therefore, the drive train is no longer under warranty by Ford or Chevy - but by the company who extended the frame.
After our trip to Alaska, we assumed volcanic-ash mud got into one of the carrier bearings - made a heck of a noise. (No vibration - just noise) Gulf Stream put us in touch with the folks at Sellers - who are VERY nice and helpful.

RE: Yellowstone Volcano (Here We Go Again)!

That was an interesting article - but the important part is that the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory still has the "alert" level at green. In other words, they aren't worried.
When we went to Alaska in late summer '06, there was a heightened alert level for the Augustine Volcano, which WAS spewing steam/ash...the folks monitoring THAT expected a significant eruption. It never did.
I've had a saying that often fits: "Mother Nature always has the last laugh". Just when we think we've figured her out - she does something contrary.....

RE: Disposing of stuff when the spouse dies

Hubby had saved boxes and boxes of still-in-plastic model cars. Finally, after I convinced him to get rid of them (yeah - I'm mean.) - I called a few local hobby shops with a list of what we had - the guy who offered the best price came and bought them. We got about $500 for 100+ cars.... I highly doubt the airplane collection is worth quite what your Mom hopes....
Granted, you could get more money by selling them on ebay - but when you factor in your time and effort to box everything and take it to the post office.... I still think it's easier to sell to a dealer.
Good luck, at any rate!

RE: How did your kids pay for college??

Since we had 7 kids to put through college, we only paid part of their tuition. They all worked at various jobs while they attended school.
The "Big Winner" was my youngest daughter, who analyzed which job had the best pay-per-hour ratio....and took a job working as a "Shot Girl" at a large Chicago nightclub. Yes, she worked hard and put up with a lot of foolishness...but when she graduated, she had saved enough money to pay her college loans off in full. She could make $500 in tips on a holiday weekend
AND she got her 4-yr degree in 3 years and got all A's and B's.
Says she hopes she NEVER has to work that hard again....LOL!!

RE: Is this guy as annoying to you as he is to me?

But ad people don't think like you and I. :) If you remember the pitchman then they consider the ad a success. Just like websites get paid by "eyes", the admen consider it a hit if you remember anything about the pitch, even if it's just the fact that it's annoying.
I don't know.... many years ago, Quiznos had a commercial with two things that looked like dead rats with google-eyes stuck on them. Yeah - they made an impression on me alright, but I'm not sure "horrified" is a word the admen seek.... I STILL don't eat at Quiznos.....
Compared to THAT, Billy Mays is only mildly annoying.....

RE: GulfStream Conquest Problems

Our '04 Conquest (28' - no slides/E-450; definitely entry-level!) rides quietly enough for a truck. I DID put those adhesive-backed felt pads on the shade frame where it can contact the metal frame of the window. (I'm talking about the felt pads one would put under a flower pot, for example, so it doesn't scratch the table?) And yes, the windows rattle a bit - I simply assume that the price one pays for having large windows. A plastic butter knife wedged in the right spot stops the rattle. And the old TV used to rattle on the slide-out mount - we bought an LCD instead. I also make sure that stuff in the cabinets is protected from rattling.
Yes - we had to compensate, I guess - but for the tens-of-thousands of dollars we saved, we can put up with a bit of hassle?
I wonder if your tires are overinflated?? Our ride can be a tad harsh if the tires are at 80 psi - but we weighed ours, then used the inflation PSI recommended by Michelin for the weight the tires are carrying.
All in all, I feel that ours rides very nice, and if we are able to have a quiet conversation while going down the road - then the MH isn't "noisy".

RE: Yellowstone Volcano (Here We Go Again)!

Someone ask if it would affect us here in S.E. Mich if it blows
I suspect it will affect all the USof A, and most likely Canada Russia and Europe and Africa and possibly even South America as well.. It will be felt world wide.. How much it's felt... Remains to be seen.
Didn't Krakatoa put the entire Earth in a "nuclear winter" for many months?? And according to the chart - Yellowstone has the capability to far exceed Krakatoa's ash output....
Yep - it would take our minds off the economy all right ;-)

RE: "What have *I* read lately?" Not much....

Install a dog door to the outside into a fenced run. Works for us, has for years.
Sigh - I'd LOVE to have that... our yard is fenced on 3 sides, with a lake in the front...picture 3 dogs coming and going - soaking wet :-( The last command I give them as they go out the door is "No swimming". Yes, even in December.
And it's not like going out is really a dire need when I'm trying to read - I think it's more like "Mom is sitting still - we need her to DO something!!!!"
sigh....

RE: Too much fun for Ike???

Thanks for all the help, everyone - now cross your fingers for Ike and I because THIS weekend is our family Christmas. More craziness and visiting family/dogs. I haven't had a chance to purchase the DAP OR the Mellow Mutt, so I'll just have to keep the old boy calm and have the anti-diarrheal meds close by. This time, though, he should be able to get some rest, since the Christmas party is at my son's house; and hopefully we won't have the hurricane-force winds??

I'll add another thought: don't forget to check the expiration dates on your RV meds, since they don't get used as often as those at home?

RE: selling in campgrounds

And here's another twist: my insurance company is VERY specific that our MH NOT be used for "commercial service". Why do I suspect that if it went up in flames, and the insurance co. found out I was selling widgets in campgrounds - that they'd deny the claim in a heartbeat????

"What have *I* read lately?" Not much....

On the ATC forum, there's a thread asking about what folks have been reading. And it got me thinking...
I *tried* to read a book the other day...and this is how it goes:
reading, reading...notice brown eyes staring under the book. cute eyes. eyebrows are getting bushy - must be time for a trim. now what was I reading again? reading, reading...Ike attempts to take book in mouth to get my attention. reading, reading...puppy lands in my lap. Jack has to go outside. reading, reading...Jack wants back inside. reading, reading...no, I don't want to throw the toy right now.
It took me 2 stinkin' weeks to read a simple book - possibly because I find myself reading the same paragraph over and over.... the only way I can get some time to sit and read coherently is to run their wheels off for a while, and hope they take a nap.....
Surely, I'm not the only one who's idea of "literature" is the daily comic strips???? Because that's about how much "reading time" I get??

RE: Early Morning uninvited visitor,

Skunks can rototill a nicely manicured lawn in one night's time....LOL!!
A dear friend was plagued by skunks, so he started live-trapping them. Said that if you approach a trapped skunk quietly, you can put a tarp over the cage and the skunk won't spray. He drove them to a nearby golf-course...until he got caught. It seems his area has an ordinance that says if you trap a skunk - you MUST kill it. Drowning is the preferred method.... fortunately, he got transferred away from Skunkland before he had to drown them....

RE: Too much fun for Ike???

Just something to think about, in lieu of the strip things. I know a few dogs that really don't react so well to those.
I was actually referring to something called "Mellow Mutt" - my daughter has used them on her hyper Pointer-mix. They're chicken strips infused with herbs or something that take the "edge" off the dog?? I'll have to ask her about them - she's a degreed Toxicologist, so I feel assured that they're safe....LOL!!! I'd just give him this "treat" before a family event...maybe I'll try one myself ;-)
I found it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/mellow-mut-Mellow-Mut-15/dp/B0006VB41W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1230743290&sr=8-1
Ike had another bad night...which means I had a bad morning :-( On the "good side" - what I cleaned up was getting to the consistency of "cow pies" - what my Vet said to watch for, to discontinue the strong meds and switch to the milder one, so that he doesn't become constipated (as good as that may sound at the moment...LOL!)

RE: Human Foods/Products Bad for Dogs

I looked over the list - I figure, like others, that I should have killed off several dogs by now....LOL!! But like most things in life, moderation is the key. I will continue to give my dogs a taste of chocolate once in a while; plus broccoli; and my food's always loaded with onion... ;-) And freeze-dried liver is the "powerful treat" that I prefer during training sessions.
But I guess if one of them chooses to eat an entire head of broccoli, I'll know enough to ask my Vet about it.
